ACO 5.0 Image Compositing

Image compositing is a combination of a couple photos edited into one photo to make it appear that the photo was taken like that. Photo manipulation is used to deceive or trick the viewer into believing that it is real. It is also used to portray a message or to alter how a photo is judged. Using the rule of thirds technique helps balance the photo. Rule of thirds can easily be used wrong if you're not using your grid on your camera. Professional photographers think of everything when they are taking a photo to get the best composition. I think that some types of photos should be edited, but some should be left alone. It all depends what kind of photo it is, color contrast, etc.

The strongest message that I hope to communicate through my composite image is that there is a lot to learn through someones eyes. I'm going to accomplish this by editing a picture into an eye so it looks like a reflection. I used rule of thirds landscape to take the photo that will be shown in the eye. For the original photo of the eye it wasn't in rule of thirds but the photo was still balanced. My goal is for my viewers eyes to go to the picture in the eye first because it's the main focus of the photo. I also want the viewers to see the picture as a reflection.

ACO 5.0- Visual Statement

Our topic for the visual statement is depression and some ways how to cope with it. We hoped to inform people about depression so they can learn more about the mental health disorder. We also wanted to teach people what to do if they are suffering from depression, or know someone who has depression.  It was more important to my team than me. The three other people in my team had all experienced some kind of depression. The requirements for this project were to make a 2-3 minute video on something that you feel strongly about. Joshua Keale-Ho and I were the actors and voices of our video. Edouard Gendron edited the whole video and also helped film along with Seth Warden.

I didn't really do much of the editing at all but I did observe Edouard and learned a couple things. We used the blade and cut tool a lot to cut out bad parts of the footage. It is important to use FCPX to stay organized and so that you can see what clips you have and what you don't have. It is really important to adjust you audio levels so that the sound is in between -6 and -12. If you don't balance your audio levels than some clips or voiceovers will be louder than others which doesn't sound good. I think both our visuals and audio had some good parts and bad parts. We ran out of ideas and time  for filming so we had to rush and those clips were not very good.

Our biggest challenge was not using our time wisely and we had lots of disagreements. Once the project got going and we understood it more we were able to use our time better. Edouard and I had two different visions for the project so we often disagreed but later learned to work together good. Edouard Gendron and I were the driving force to get this done but Joshua was a huge help too. Seth didn't do much to complete the project but he provided good ideas. My favorite part of this project was making the soundtrack and recording the voiceover.

ACO 1.0 - Modern Art Movement

Cubism became popular because there were many people looking for a new form of art that defied the rules of traditional Western artwork. Cubism is said to be the start of the modern age of art. Cubism has affected art today like digital art too. Artists often influence culture or change the way society thinks. I think this art movement is a very unique style because of the geometric lines and sharp lines. All of the paintings also have a specific meaning to them and it's good to understand them.
Bottle and Fishes1912, George Braque
The artist that created this piece was George Braque in 1912. Braque showed bottles and fishes throughout his painting career. This painting, along many other Cubism pieces were painted with mostly horizontal and vertical lines. I think an artists work can definitely change someones perception or opinion. It might not be consciously but it definitely has an impact. Technology has allowed many people to be able to create incredible pieces with less skill. I also believe that technology will lead to a more modern art age and style.

ACO 7.0-Workplace Safety Video

The project goal for the workplace safety video was to create an educational video to inform people how to prevent a hostile workplace. I was partnered up with Cameron Booth and Dreyden Iwamoto for this project. Cameron was the filmer for our project and Dreyden and I acted.  I also designed the audio track. Dreyden didn't want to be filmed but he came around and acted. Sometimes it hard to do something that's not comfortable.

For this project we were very confused and unclear from the beginning. We also did not use our time wisely enough. It requires a lot of filming and editing to create a decent project. We were unable to meet the requirements. Our lowest scoring critique results was in entertainment value. This was because we did no complete our filming.  The highest scoring critique result was the clarity of audio.  We recorded a high quality voiceover and added a soundtrack. We need to have better communication as a team and use our time wisely.

ACO 5.0- Coding Altino Cars

Coding is an important thing to learn even if your not going to be programmer because so many things now are becoming automated. In challenge #1we were asked to code the Altino cars so they could do a figure eight shape. We had to go around obstacles and start and finish in the same place. We made it turn but every 1.2 seconds we made the wheels straighten so we wouldn't cut corners. We had to make lots of small adjustments to make it work. It was a little difficult since you had to change things so much and test them but we got the hang of it.

For challenge #2 we used new commands to make the lights flash and the sirens go off like an ambulance. I know that if a company produced a autonomous vehicle it would go threw so much testing that would ensure it was safe. I would like to see what it is like to get a ride in an autonomous car. I'm guessing that they probably will not have self-driving emergency vehicles because they still need real people to carry out the tasks.

ACO 3.0- Art & Design

In my line drawing photo I used lots of line and value. I used line to make up most of the drawing and make it clear what objects are in my photo. I used value and shading to make it look more realistic. Using value can make an object appear to be 3D. If you use a smaller brush and overlap it the outcome is better the if you just use a bigger brush. My favorite part of drawing digitally is the tracing and outlining. I also like to do the shading using a size 5 brush at a 75% hardness. The most challenging part of this for me is drawing straight lines or keeping steady. I think with practice I will become better at this and will be more smooth.

My landscape image was taken in New York City over the summer when I went there to visit family. The line drawing doesn't have as much detail as the landscape one. My landscape photo also has a lot more shading and a much broader scale of value. I used the more advanced method to refine my landscape photo.  The outcome of the more advanced way was a little harder but the outcome was really good. It looks a lot more like it was hand drawn and it has a paper texture. My photo turned out how I wanted it to look.

My portrait photo is of my brother in front of a sunset out on a boat. We were on a dinner boat tour going down the Na Pali for my grandmas birthday. My final image has lot of contrast, so many different light and dark spots. It is easy to finds place to put value and texture. The portrait photo also has a lot of line, color, and perspective. My critique results were very good. 14 people graded my mix photo as expert. I spent the most time on this one and used the most amount of texture value. I agree with my critique results,  I think I did pretty good on the mix and was very thorough.
